i personally use myBB when i want free forum scripts for legit sites. otherwise i just used nulled VB. VB is still by far the best.

I'm probably alone in this, but I like bbPress personally. It's extremely basic, but that is the great thing -- it's not bloated, and you can customise 'til the cows come home. You can always tell when a site is VBulletin powered, because it's not very easy to customise much, I believe. I am sick to death of forums which sport their software's default theme. bbPress is a framework, and lets you get it exactly how you want it. There aren't tons of features as standard -- but the idea is that you download plugins, or even make your own. (And it's completely free and open-source; the police won't arrest you. And if you have a WordPress blog you can integrate it with your bbPress forum. And bbPress has Gravatar support. Yeah!)

I prefer the old school phpBB (2.0), I found Olympus to be over complicated for a forum system - way too complicated and time consuming to setup.

I despise SMF, as it sucks. Looks crappy and is a pain to work with.

MyBB isn't too bad, I'd only use it if I had to!

The term you get what you pay for with IPB and vBulletin is true, I prefer IPB from an admin point of view, and I prefer vB from a members point of view (it's also easier to install mods on).

Another free one is IPB 1.3.x, and 2.0.x - if you search you'll find them. They were the only releases of IPB before they went premium.

I prefer use phpbb but it is very dificult use for use a mod for this ej: points , lottery . I behind schedule much time putting this on phpbb
